(1) Nella metafora usata da Fish in questo disco, in diverse canzoni (oltre che nel titolo dell’album, nella title-track e nella bellissima copertina, dove la cosa è molto chiara ed evidente), la “Collina” è il consumismo e il desiderio di arrivare, l’ambizione, la mancanza di empatia, l’ammassare oggetti e concetti di cui non abbiamo davvero bisogno perché sono indotti dai valori falsi della società in cui viviamo. Il protagonista di questa canzone fa di tutto per scalare la collina, cercando di salvare la propria autostima ai suoi stessi occhi, per poi scoprire che la vista dalla sua cima è tutt’altro che gradevole. Salire la collina significa essere arrampicatori sociali, persone superficiali o comunque abbagliate da un’ambizione, da un desiderio o da un sogno distorto.
(2) “Coming up roses” è una frase idiomatica inglese che si può tradurre con “tutto sta andando bene, a gonfie vele” e che è imparentata con il proverbio italiano “se son rose, fioriranno”. Purtroppo, traducendone il senso, si perde il gioco di parole più avanti, nella canzone, quando urla “senti il profumo delle rose”. Continuando sull’allegoria delle vele gonfie, per rendere il richiamo, si potrebbe dire “senti il vento che soffia”.
(3) Non essere in grado di vedere il bosco per gli alberi significa essere troppo concentrati sui particolari (gli alberi) e quindi lasciarsi sfuggire il “disegno più grande” (il bosco, la foresta).
(4) “Chancer” è una persona che è abituata a rischiare (in inglese: “to take chance”), quindi un giocatore d’azzardo o uno scommettitore.
(5) “To hold out” può significare molte cose (come “tenere fuori”) ma nel contesto significa probabilmente “resistere, rifiutare”, proprio come un guerriero che non si arrende (apparentemente) alle lusinghe e alle tentazioni.
(6) “A fool with a name” si usa generalmente per indicare persone che hanno “un nome”, quindi persone di successo, ma che non lo hanno meritato. Letteralmente è “un pazzo con un nome”, ma significa “uno scemo famoso” o qualcosa di molto simile. Può significare anche che la persona è famosa proprio perché è stupida.
